February 21st, 2010 Womens Sunglasses: Not Just For Summer Anymore

It used to be that sunglasses were only for the hot summer months. Not anymore as sunglasses have become an essential part of any winter fashion getup.

Now more than ever, sunglasses are a year round accessory. If you want proof that men’s and women’s sunglasses do a killing in the winter time, all you have to do is watch a couple of minutes of the Winter Olympics coverage. Not only are the athletes fully decked out in shades (or specially designed goggles that cost more then you could imagine paying for some head gear), but everywhere you look people are wearing shades to protect their eyes from the harmful rays of the sun. And, as they are probably thinking, while they are protecting their eyes why not look good with designer shades that will make them stand out from the crowd.

Skiers have known for years that sunglasses are important tools for snow play. Besides protecting your eyes from “snow blindness” (an actual medical term), sunglasses can also help skiers better see the course and those who surround you. When snowboarders began to rule the slopes, they brought their own style with them. Gone were expensive designer sunglasses and in were new, “cooler”, sometimes just as expensive counter-culture sunglasses. Now, as counter-culture has become mainstream, skier and snowboarder styles have become relatively similar and both enjoy rather similar tastes in shades. While they might not agree on everything, skier and snowboarders all seem to don the sunglasses of their choice.

Now, it seems like everyone is wearing sunglasses in the winter time. And not only when it’s sunny and snowy, but also when it’s cloudy and overcast usually for fashion reasons. Why else would people now be wearing sunglasses indoors (check out your next awards show). Just scanning over the crowd at Olympic venues you can see many people wearing sunglasses even when it’s not sunny out. It’s just become such a part of people’s daily dress that the fact it’s not even sunny out doesn’t really seem to matter anymore.

When picking good shades for the winter time, it is paramount to consider what conditions you are going to be using them in. If you’re using them for snow play such as skiing or snowboarding it is good to get something that will block out as much of the UV’s as possible. This will help you not only stave off snow blindness, but also see things clearer on the slopes. If, on the other hand, you’re using it just to look cool, well, you can just go with your typical summer sunglasses. You might want to go with something that doesn’t block out that much light if you’re going for merely fashion in the winter time. That way the world won’t look dark all the time.

December 23rd, 2009 Protect Your Eyes with Sunglasses and Healthy Foods

Most people believe that their sight is their most important sense.  So you want to make sure that you take care of it so that you will always have it!

Your eyes are very sensitive so you want to be sure that you take care of them the best way possible.  And there are some basic things that people can do on that daily basis to insure that they always have healthy eyes.  Going for that yearly eye exam is just so important.  An eye doctor can see things that other doctors may not be able to see just by looking at and into your eyes.  They can see so much more than just the diseases that have to do with the eyes.

There are foods that you can add to your diet to strengthen and keep your eyes in great health.  Your mom may have said to eat your carrots because they are good for your eyes and they are.  Anything high in Vitamin A and beta-carotene is great for your eyesight.  But did you know that garlic is fabulous for keeping your eyes healthy. Garlic has sulfur which can help prevent cataracts.  It also has quercetin which is also fabulous for good eye health.  Other foods high in these are avocados, broccoli, onions,  eggs, and asparagus.  Beans is another great food that you may want to add to your diet because they have been known to reduce your chances of getting glaucoma.

You want to be sure that you are always well hydrated.  Drinking water on a regular basis is a great way to stay hydrated.  Drinking water helps to flush out the unwanted toxins in your body.

You also want to limit your time on the computer and watching the television.  Your eyes can be very strained if you spend all day watching a computer screen.  Your eyes need to rest so you also want to be sure that you get enough sleep at night time.

There are many things that you can do to protect your eyes and one of the most basic things it to protect them from the elements of nature.  By just having sunglasses on during the day you will be protecting your eyes from the cold and dry wind as well as from the suns harmful rays.

The suns rays can contribute to the development of cataracts and macular degeneration.  So be sure that you get sunglasses that have 100% UV protection and do not just wear them in the summer.  You should be wearing them year round and especially in the car for the high water and snow glare.   If you do not have a pair of sunglasses on hand then get a wide brimmed hat to shade your eyes.

So be sure to eat the right foods and get a good pair of sunglasses that are SPF so that they block the ultraviolet and other harmful rays.

November 27th, 2009 The Sun and Your Vacation

The key to having a good vacation is to pack smartly and consider everything you might need for every condition. One thing that the average vacationer might forget is that no matter what time of year it is the sun will always be there and, like it or not, it will play a part in your trip.

One mistake that many people make when planning a trip is not taking the sun into consideration. I know that sentence might sound a little weird at first, but when you really think about it the sun is always there and must be taken into consideration even in the winter months.

It’s not just about men’s or women’s sunglasses either- though that’s not a bad place to start. Let’s talk about taking a trip to the mountains in the winter. What many people might not think about is that on a clear winter’s day on a snowy mountain slope, the sun is even a bigger deal then it would be on a summer day. This is because the glare coming off of the snow is much more intense than anything you might encounter at home. Snow blindness doesn’t just apply to white out conditions. You can do serious damage to your corneas by not wearing sunglasses when the sun is out in snowy conditions (and don’t forget the sunblock either).

Another place to consider the sun is on a cruise ship. Most people view a cruise ship as a self contained destination where you will be inside most of the time. While that is true in most cases, that does not mean that you won’t be encountering the sun while on deck or in port. Before you leave be sure to check the weather of your cruise ships “Port-of-calls” and plan accordingly. Also, if you’re planning on tanning on deck, make sure you bring plenty of sunblock.

Road trips are a great way to see the country and to soak in the local flavor of the people who populate it. Even though much of a road trip will take place inside of a vehicle, this does not mean that the sun doesn’t play a key part in your trip. If the sun is out, even on a winter day, the driver should always remember to bring their sunglasses. Nothing will annoy a driver more on a long drive then the sun persistently getting in his or her eyes. This could lead to accidents, especially when roads are populated. It also might be a good idea to invest in a sun screen to put across the front windshield while the car is parked. This way the sun won’t damage the car’s interior when it’s parked on a hot day.

As long as you use your head your trip will be a fun, safe, and memorable one. Remember: the sun is always there, and it should be respected and planned for no matter where you are going.
