December 22nd, 2010 Popular Career Occupations that Most Dream About

When one is sitting in their cubicle, or caught in rush hour traffic on the way to work, the mind begins to wander on various subjects and topics. If one is unsatisfied with their current employment status or occupation, fantasy of the most elite and respected jobs begins to erupt. Profession choices range from a successful lawyer, to a high-paid movie star.

Reports show and indicate that for this current year, as well as the quickly approaching one, the medical field is one of the most sought after professions, in addition to being the most needed and best paying. Thus, this supports the notion that when one fantasizes about making a career change, or picturing being in a career that is well respected and enjoyed, typically that career involves some form of medical occupation.

Perhaps it is not the job itself but more of the ambience the field has, and the character of the individuals who daunt on those prestigious men’s or women’s lab coats. The name embroidered on the side enlightens those who walk by showing the sophistication and dedication the individual has. Thus, it is readily apparent that the lab coat plays a vital component in the medical profession.

Those in the medical field are highly respected individuals. Many films and television shows portray physicians or nurses as those who are part of an elite group in relation to the general public. Thus, inevitably most would like to feel that same sensation. Though working in such a profession does take large amounts of time as well as finances, the pay offs are rather evident.

Other such occupations include lawyers, firemen, scientists, a well-established singer or song writer, or even the CEO of a nationwide recognized company. Regardless of the imaginative profession, most feel inadequate in the positions currently held and thus would like to accomplish and find something greater.

Though there are many more careers available that many dream about, or simply desire something far better and more rewarding to what they are currently doing, it is a well known fact that very few are able to say they have great admiration for their job. Thus even those who perhaps are considered to have the ultimate profession or career, may also have aspirations to do something else.

June 30th, 2010 A Women’s Lab Coat: The Perfect Graduation Gift

What do you get the girl that has everything? It’s a question, well, more an ironic question, that’s been asked for centuries. What are you supposed to get a woman who is graduating high school? I know that high school graduation gifts haven’t really been in style in recent years, but I feel like, as she is the daughter of a close friend, I should get her something that would be useful and not just go the typical gift card route.

With my friend’s daughter planning to go to medical school during her college career, I thought that I should get her something that she might need for her medical studies. After lying in bed for a while trying to figure out what to get her it finally hit me: a women’s lab coat. It made perfect sense: every doctor needs a lab coat, right? What I didn’t know, though, is that there are a lot more to buying a lab coat then I first imagined.

First thing you need to understand about lab coats is that not all are created equal. Think about it: a lab coat is more than just a part of a doctor or nurses’ clothing ensemble, it is a function piece of their medical arsenal. Since a lab coat might be worn for up to 12 hours a day you need something that is not only comfortable, but also has a fit that will not inhibit or limit any movements or procedures. They need to be light and breathable, while being strong enough to stand up to dirt, stains, and, in a lot of cases, medical waste. It needs pockets that can hold pens, paper and equipment and stitching that will stand up to extended use. Yes, these are all things you have to consider when buying a lab coat, which is why it took me nearly a week to find the right one.

While there are a lot of lab coat makers who offer decent products at an ok price, you really must look at a lab coat as more of an investment then a quick purchase. While it cost more than, say, a bouquet of flowers or a Target gift card, the lab coat which I decided on should last her through at least her college years. Plus, because it is custom fit, it’s more personal than just about anything else you can buy a grad.

Upon receiving her gift, I got a long, detailed thank you card from her. She thanked me for thinking outside the box and getting her something that she truly needed. She recently wore it for the first time during a lab assignment and raved about how well it fit. I think all my hard work paid off.

April 28th, 2010 Made In The USA: Not Just A Cliché

I’m sure by now the phrase “Made in The USA” has become a cliché. It’s something that is thrown around so much that it’s pretty much lost its meaning. It’s become a way for companies to soften the blow of their economic identity. A big box store that takes over a local economy is supposedly good for America because it stocks things that are made in America (though, mostly made in China). What does that even mean? Are we supposed to support these companies and buy their products just because they are made in the USA?

Well, though it’s become a cliché, the label “Made In The USA” does have many advantages in this troubled economy. Unless you truly understand the business world, you might not be aware that products provide money for much more than just the company. Take women’s lab coats for example. Purchasing a lab coat is not to be taken lightly. Doctors need something more than a simple white coat, they need something what will repel stains, keep fresh and, most importantly, stay comfortable during a ten hour work day. Because of this most doctors are willing to pay a bit more for a quality lab coat so something made locally in a small factory in the United States is definitely more attractive then something mass produced in Asia.

What most people don’t understand, though, is that the money spent on a lab coat doesn’t just profit the company selling the lab coat. Instead the money that is spent on the lab coat directly goes to help everyone who had a hand in getting the lab coat from the factory to your doorstep.

Obviously the sale of a “Made in the USA” lab coat will benefit the sewing factories workers and embroiderers who helped put the coat together. But the sale will also benefit the designers who helped design the coat and the lab who helped develop the new technology that helps the coat stand out from the rest. In addition everyone from the general managers who keep the factory running smoothly to the janitors who help keep the place clean benefit from the purchase of the product.

But it doesn’t stop there. Since the product had to be marketed the sale will ultimately benefit the PR and SEO firms who helped get the brand name out there and the sales companies that provided the coat for sale through their website or store. And let’s not forget the actual person who sold you the lab coat, either in person, on the phone or over the internet. These are all people that ultimately benefit from the sale of this lab coat.

So next time you wonder how you can help the US economy in this time of crisis just think of all the people you would help when purchasing a “Made in the USA” product. I know it might sound cliché, but it really does help.

January 31st, 2010 The Difference in Men’s Lab Coats and Women’s Lab Coats

If you are in the medical profession you understand how important a lab coat is throughout the day. Chances are, you also know that there is a difference between a men’s and a women’s lab coat.

There are many things in the clothing universe that you just don’t think about. Like for example: is there a difference between men’s lab coats and women’s lab coats? I guess it really doesn’t matter unless you wear a lab coat all day, but if you do wear one then you probably know the answer: yes, there is. It might be subtle, but for doctors subtle is important.

In recent years a big industry has sprung up for both male and female specific lab coats. Maybe it’s all these doctor show’s starring beautiful people which are fueling this industry, but women have specific needs when it comes to fit and comfort just like men do. It’s not just the medical industry either, many companies have ditched unisex uniforms for male and female uniforms which are tailored to each sexes individual needs.

In the medical field, uniforms are very common. From receptionists to nurses to doctors to surgeons, everyone you see seems to be wearing a specific uniform tailored for their tasks. For nurses, scrubs are usually the norm. While there is not a huge difference in the tailored pattern for each sex, there are definitely design differences. For example, there is a huge market for themed scrubs. For women you can get anything from a pattern of cats to Big Bird from Sesame Street. For men, well, they usually go plain but the sky is the limit for them to. Scrubs can also run the gambit in cost from cheap pairs which you can change daily to something designer and expensive that can last the long haul.

For doctors, uniforms are a bit difference. For his time in his office a doctor will usually wear either slacks and a dress shirt, or a dress and pant suit, depending on the sex. When it’s time to visit the patients, though, it’s usually time to don a lab coat over your outfit. Most hospitals or clinics will usually allow doctors to pick their own lab coats and though most look the same (some variation of the color white and a few pockets), not all lab coats are created equal. Besides having different styles for both men and women, lab coats can feature different designs, strain protectors, fabrics and even pockets. Cost wise, they can go from a basic lab coat that will need to be tossed after a few months for around $30 to a designer lab coat that can repel stains and stay white for a couple hundred dollars. Since they spend so much time in them a doctor will usually invest in a more expensive coat so they don’t need to keep replacing them.

So there you go. There is a difference in men’s lab coats and women’s lab coats. See, you learn something new every day.

December 26th, 2009 A Women’s Perspective on Buying Woman’s Lab Coats Online

Whomever believes that all women’s lab coats are created equal obviously has never had to wear one. As someone who wears lab coats on a daily basis I feel like I need to speak out about what I find to be issues with finding the right one to purchase.

As a woman, I just feel the need to speak out. The vast majority of women’s lab coats I find online that is advertised as “designer” or “qualities” are merely false advertisements. Most of these lab coats are poorly made from flimsy fabric, with not much attention paid to fitting an actually women’s body. Also, the fabric is nowhere near what you would call “designer” and looks terrible. We aren’t talking “made in America” quality fabrics, instead most of these “designer” lab coats are imported from some far away land.

Haven’t the people who design these lab coats ever actually wear lab coats? It seems like they don’t even know the basics of what makes a comfortable one. Lab coats made from cotton/poly blended fabric? That is so uncomfortable. In addition, they don’t hold up well to washing and when you do wash them they hardly come clean. I guess the stains set into the poly or something. Anyone who wears a lab coat during their work day knows that 100% cotton fabric is much more comfortable. In addition, unlike their cheap cotton/poly blended cousins, they clean and wash better. This means that the lab coat will last longer and, just as important, look good for your bevy of patients.

Why is it that very few websites offer women’s lab coats that are made specifically to fit a women’s body? Most say they do but they just don’t. There are sized down versions of men’s coats which clearly don’t work for me. I look for lab coats that are in women’s sizes 0, 2, 4, 6, etc, not men’s sizes that happen to fit a woman. It takes a little searching, but eventually I found a few companies offering specifically fitted women’s lab coats in my size. I even found a few that offer free return shipping- a definite plus with the purchase.

Finding lab coats online that are made in the U.S.A are rare. Those I have found cost a little more but are absolutely worth it. They are much higher quality that those imported from foreign countries, which means that they last longer (and save you money in the long run). I’ve also found that they fit better and offer some kind of stain fighting treatment. And, best of all, they help our economy.

Overall, searching most sites just drives me crazy. I would suggest buying lab coats right from the manufacture when you can. They offer more personalized service and some even offer embroidery. It may cost a bit more but it’s worth it in the long run.

Author Kimberly green has found that picking out a lab coat is easy once you know what to look for.
