December 6th, 2010 New Territory for Men Out There

When it comes time for a man to choose one of the many mens wedding rings out there for his upcoming nuptials, it may be the first time in his entire life that he has actually had to choose a ring for himself. If you think about it, it only makes sense: how often does a man really pick out a piece of jewelry for himself? Unless you are one of the small percentages of men out there who really enjoy buying jewelry for themselves, there is a good chance that you’ve never even set foot in a jewelry store to pick out your own piece. This isn’t to say that they have never bought anything in a jewelry store (holiday, birthday and anniversary gifts for their significant other), or have never worn jewelry (it was usually bought for them), just that when it comes time to buy something for themselves, they might be at a bit of a disadvantage.

If you’ve never actually bought a piece of jewelry for yourself, it’s hard to sit back and know what to look for. It’s the same thing in buying a car, if you’ve never done it before you might not know how to even get started on the process. Finding a men’s wedding ring isn’t just about finding the most cost effective one, or getting the flashiest one out of the bunch, it’s about finding one that actually fits what you want in a ring. Heck, you are the one who is going to be wearing it, you should have the final say in what you are going to get. With that said, for a lot of men it’s not that easy, especially when you’ve never done it before.

The problem is that when you are picking out something that you normally don’t pick out you have a tendency to over think your purchase. Sure, you might find something that you like in the jewelry case, but you might think that it’s not that easy and that you need to do more research into the process. In a way, though, that’s the trick when it comes to jewelry: knowing that when you find something you like, well, you’ve found what you want. Of course, if it’s out of your budget realm then you should double think your purchase, but if it fits what you need to get and you like it, well, you’ve found your piece.

So the best piece of advice for men when it comes time to find that wedding ring for themselves: start backwards. Before you start thinking about price just go into a shop and try and find something you like. Once you find it, then you can start contemplating price and, if need be, you can move on and find something else.

November 2nd, 2010 Things Have Changed A Lot In Mens Wedding Rings

Even though you might not believe it at first glance, you would be quiet surprised how big of a market there is for mens wedding rings. Yeah, you know all about women’s wedding rings; about how important they are for the special day. But there is actually quite a lot of attention put towards the men in the wedding equation as well. Not only are there a variety of different types of men’s wedding rings out there, but also online and physical shops that dedicate their either their entire or a good amount of their selection to men’s rings. The reason for this is because of a nice renaissance that has occurred in recent years with men’s jewelry. No longer is it just a choice between way too much “bling” or boring simplicity, but a variety of different styles, metals, and jewels being offered to the men. This means that men who are in the market for a ring have a much bigger selection than ever before.

Say you were never a straight gold or silver jewelry guy before. In fact, say you aren’t a jewelry guy at all. Chances are, the men’s jewelry you’ve seen your entire life has only involved gold, silver, platinum, and maybe a little bit of bronze, depending on where you are shopping. If you find yourself in the market for a wedding ring and you have an aversion to these somewhat boring, everyday metals, the good news is that you have a variety of other options for you to choose from including palladium, platinum and even tungsten. Things have changed a lot in the last twenty years.

In addition to the changes in metals, there has also been a big shift in design for the wedding bands as well. While the simple, rounded style ring is still the choice for many men out there, there are also a variety of different designs out there that are a bit more creative. For example: many of the bands include grooves which add fascinating character to the ring. Many designers will actually add gold or silver rings to these grooves to allow for a more diverse style. In addition, some rings include such features as an inlaid black diamond, or even a gold or sterling rope which brings the ring into another dimension.

In other words, there are a variety of different rings on the market for men who are looking for a little more than straight gold and silver for their special day. Do your research, find a good deal and pick something that you’ll be happy with the rest of your life.

September 30th, 2010 What Women Like In Men’s Jewelry

I had a friend the other day ask me an interesting question: “What do women like in a mens wedding rings?” My first thought was to say “What does it matter what a woman thinks about it, it’s just showing that you are married?” The more I thought about it, though, I realized he meant what his wife thinks. I gave him some quick answer about just asking her, but as the night went on I found myself thinking more about that question. What exactly do women like in a piece of jewelry that we are never going to wear? I frankly never gave a second thought to the kind of wedding ring that my husband has on because I didn’t help him pick it up (though I love the one he got for me).

So what exactly do women like in a men’s wedding ring? Well, it probably differs depending on what women you ask. I’m a very “bare bones” person when it comes to jewelry. I like the look of the piece more than what adorns it, so I’m pretty basic in what I like in a men’s wedding ring. Other women, though, like things that are bright and shiny and hence like stones. Of course, whether they like it on their guys rings might be different then what they like on their own. Argh, so confusing, I know. Traditionally men’s rings are more bare bones, though that has more to do with guys tastes then a women’s. As far as I’ve been told (and gathered from my friends), men don’t like their rings that show off too much, they just like them to be there on their finger.

A lot of women, including myself, like a lot of the new metals that are being introduced into the market. Everything from palladium to black ti is being used on rings and men, apparently, are eating it up. They look industrial as well as classy. Plus with grooves, and maybe even a single inlaid diamond, they are versatile and both stand out and lay back at the same time (if that makes sense). Unlike, say, gold or silver, these types of metals seem to match men’s personalities a bit better. Though, again, whether or not your woman will like it varies.

When it comes down to it, though, the best way to make sure that your woman likes what you pick out in a men’s wedding ring is to either A) talk with them about it or B) have them come with you to pick out his and her’s rings. This shouldn’t be a guessing game, and you shouldn’t be afraid to ask. To be completely honest, most women probably haven’t thought about what they like in men’s jewelry. It can be a learning experience for both of you.

July 21st, 2009 Jewelry In Professional Sports

Whether fans like it or not, in sports it’s all about the rules. Besides giving the games their structure, rules are meant to give all participants a (supposedly) even playing field. Some are logical, some are seemingly illogical, and some are so confusing that you need a diagram to figure them out. A league rulebook covers everything from the dimension of a field to the uniforms worn by the players. And not just the jersey or the pants or the helmet, but leagues have rules on accessories too. Have you ever wondered what kind of jewelry an athlete is allowed to wear on the field? Like is a pitcher player allowed to wear a men’s wedding ring on the on the mound? Or is a hockey player allowed to wear a necklace? Here is a brief rundown on what professional athletes are allowed to wear in the four major sports.

NHL

Since most of the a players body is covered on the ice (save the neck and face) by their uniform, skates, socks, gloves and helmet, the NHL does not have any rules pertaining to what type of jewelry can be worn during the game. Since it’s a high impact sport, players are apt not to wear any type of earrings or rings during the games. As for necklaces, as long as they don’t appear outside of the jersey they are allowed.

NFL

If there is one sport that is hyper critical of what a player wears on the field, it is the NFL (or as some fans have dubbed it the “No Fun League”). Not only can you get penalized for excessive celebration on the field, but also for wearing non- sanctioned socks or shoes. And the rules begin from the time someone hits the field for pre-game practice all the way to the time they leave the stadium. Rules are even enforced during post game interviews! Ironically, though, the NFL does not have excessive rules on what kind of jewelry can be worn on the field. Since hands are primarily used for catching and blocking, rings are generally not worn as they could affect the catching or throwing of a ball. Necklaces and ear rings, on the other hand, are worn, as long as they are within reason. Bracelets, on the other hand, must be covered at all time. Did I mention that officials review the entire game afterwards to make sure (once again) that no one broke uniform rules during the game? Wow.

NBA

In the past few years the commissioner’s office has begun to come down hard on NBA players with a new dress code that has limited what a player could wear before and after a game. This is extended to the court where NBA players are not allowed to wear any type of jewelry. This means earrings; bracelets, rings and necklaces are all no-no’s. The only accessories allowed on the court are knee and elbow braces, headbands and, of course, tattoos.

MLB

Major League Baseball, on the other hand, seems to have a very liberal policy when it comes to jewelry.  Essentially you can wear any type of jewelry unless it’s deemed by an umpire as “distracting” or can interfere with the game. In other words, pitchers can’t wear rings as they might scuff the ball and no giant mirrored necklaces that might distract the batter from the ball (not that anyone is thinking of wearing it, but you get the idea).

Seems most sports don’t allow for jewelry, not even mens wedding rings, so what’s a guy to do?  Keep that ring somewhere safe until the game is over!

January 14th, 2009 The Evolution of Mens Wedding Rings

While mens wedding rings are looked at as being a long-standing tradition, the truth of the matter is that rings for men are a relatively recent phenomenon. Two hundred years ago, it would be a rare to see a man with a wedding ring. These days, not only are mens wedding rings the “norm”, but gold isn’t the only material used in them. Read through the rest of this article to find out more about the history and current standing of wedding rings for men.Once upon a time, mens wedding rings didn’t exist. Until a hundred or so years ago, men did not wear wedding bands. Oh, they gave their wives rings, fancy gold bands that might have jewels encrusted, but as for themselves, there was no visible notation of marriage.

These days, almost all men sport wedding rings. Older men, such as those individuals who were born in the 1920′s and 1930′s, may not necessarily see a reason for wearing a ring, but any man born after the 1940′s or so definitely allowed for a gold wedding band to be slipped on his finger.

Mens wedding rings are typically simple bands fashioned out of pure gold. This is the traditional type of wedding ring, for both a man and a woman. But in the last few decades, some subtle and not so subtle changes have taken place, and on any given day you might spot some gold mens wedding rings, and some wedding rings made up of other materials, as well.

Did you know that gold is a relatively soft metal? Over time, it will give way to scratches, minuscule nicks and tarnishing. While it’s certainly acceptable for a man’s wedding ring to have a bit of ruggedness or wear to it, many men — and their wives — wish for a more durable ring that will look pristine. For this type of ring, other materials will certainly be called into play.

Let’s take a look at mens wedding rings that are made out of palladium and platinum. Both of these materials are of very high quality, and both are very resistant to wear and tear. Platinum is another material that is perfect for wedding rings for a man. Like palladium and platinum, this material is quite “masculine”, but is also very resistant to scratches, nicks and tarnishing. Rings made out of these materials will easily last through several generations and even centuries, which make them ideal for family heirlooms.

If you are looking for mens wedding rings that come in alternative materials to gold, then you’ll want to start doing some jewelry shopping. Jewelry shops in the malls may have a bit to offer in terms of rings made up of other materials, but your best shopping source will be online. Online, you will be able to find many stores that specialize in mens wedding rings that are made out of platinum, titanium and other non-gold materials.
