Its funny how mentally prepared you have to get yourself in order to start a weight loss routine. Some people say “Oh, it’s 50% mental and 50% physical”, but I disagree. I say it’s about 90% mental and 10% physical. Running a mile is easy- getting yourself up to run a mile is almost impossible. Sometimes I just wonder why I don’t take the easy way out. Take a diet pill or take some HCG for weight loss. Nope, I want to do it the honest way. I don’t want any help, I apparently want to take the hard road. Why? Well, to quote Homer Simpson “Because I’m an idiot”.
Ok, ok, I’m being dramatic. It’s not like taking a supplement is technically cheating; it’s just a lot to commit to, at least in my book. Once I eventually get into a weight loss routine it will be easier to get up and run, but whenever you start something up the first few weeks are like torture. I literally considered doing finances yesterday instead of doing my run… and I hate finances more than just about anything.
I’ve found that when it comes to running my one salvation is music. With a busy day I don’t get much time to listen to new music, really the only time I have to listen to my iPod is while running. As I like to keep current on my music, I have officially dubbed my runs as my “new music time”. Every day before my run I’ll put together a new playlist features new songs I’ve downloaded, songs I’ve found on podcasts and a couple of old favorites to keep me going on my run. This gets me motivated to go on my run, it’s my time to find out what’s new in the world of music.
Right now my favorite running songs run the gammit from dance-rock like LCD Soundsystem and Does This Offend You, Yeah?, to “gypsy-punk” band Gogol Bordello and one of my old favorites The Arcade Fire. The key when running is to find music that you can get lost in. You want more than a soundtrack to your run, you want something that becomes part of your run. I came to the realization last week that I’m never going to actually find myself looking forward to a run. What I will look forward to, though, is a chance to listen to my favorite music.
Now that is what I call motivation.

I learned a valuable lesson the other day: if you’re going to go for a run at night, don’t plan to do it too close to your bed time. Oh, you can try other fitness related activities before sleepy time: do a few pushups, take some HCG for weight loss, or lift some weights. But as much as you think a brisk run is going to tire you out, you are very, very wrong.
If you think about it, it’s fairly simple body dynamics: if you do any type of strenuous exercise before bed you’re going to raise your heart beat level. Because of this, your body is going to release some endorphins. This is going to perk you up, even if your body is tired and ready for bed.
I unfortunately learned this the hard way. When I got back from my run at around 8:30pm my body felt like it wanted to just fall into a pile and just fall asleep right there in the entry way. After some effort I finally lugged myself upstairs, changed into my pajamas, got into bed and set my head down for a nights rest.
Then… bam: wide awake. I couldn’t have fallen asleep if you hit me on the head with a mallet (actually, don’t try that). Even though my body felt tired enough to sleep my mind was racing. I ended up tossing and turning for about two hours before I was finally able to sleep.
When talking with my friends I discovered that this is fairly common. Your brain often has a much different agenda then your body. It can feel that your body wants to rest, but it still has some stuff to get done on its own. When I asked my friends what they did to fight this they gave me a good two part answer:
1)Plan your run an hour earlier than usual. This will give your brain more of a chance to slow down before bed time. And…
2)Take a shower. A nice warm shower will not only help sooth your aching muscles, but also calm your mind.
This two part plan actually worked. I tried it after my next run and I found that by the time I was in bed my mind was finally restful. It’s amazing how your body works, how you have to coax different parts of it in different ways. So next time you’re tossing and turning after a night of exercise take a shower. It might help your plight, and make you smell a little better in the process.

Since I was a child I’ve admired the magic of spring training baseball. It’s all about a renewal and new beginnings. And it’s unlike anything else in sports.
When I was a kid my dad used to take me and my brother to spring training games down in Florida for the weekend. This was always a weekend of sun, fun, catching multiple games a day and meeting a lot of young players who would go on to be superstars. I came to treasure these times not only because it was great family time, but because it would ignite a lifelong love of spring training. It not only meant that the sun was coming out again, but that it was a new beginning for everyone in baseball.
During the off-season you would always here about baseball players getting ready for the season. In the dark days of December you would read about their workout regimens, about how they would spend their mornings learning how to mix HCG, then going out to train at their indoor gym all afternoon long. What spring training meant is that everything was starting anew and that the training regime would now begin to pay off on the actual field. It was like the beginning of spring and a sign that things would begin changing.
My favorite thing to do at spring training was watch the pitchers. Unlike just about any other position in sports, pitching is about finding your rhythm. It’s about getting back that fastball that you last left on the mound four months ago. Spring training for a pitcher is about making sure your speed and control doesn’t slip. It’s about trying to perfect your art.
During spring training, outside of bullpen work managers don’t like to have their pitchers on the mound for too long. It is possible to wear your pitcher out if you push them too hard out of the gate. You watch managers bring their pitchers into spring training games for about 2 innings at a time and just when a pitcher is about to hit his stride you take him out. It’s all about coaxing a pitcher to slowly get to his full potential. Start them at 70% and slowly build them up so that when they are ready for opening day they are at a full 100%. This is why managers get paid so much and are much smarter than the average sports fan: they know about patience and they about finding the best way to get the most out of their playoffs. Its reasons like that why there is nothing quite like spring training baseball.

Some people take HCG for weight loss. Others spend day in and day out trying to be the best athlete in the world. For them, it’s all about being .01 seconds better than your opponent.
At this moment I am obsessive watching the Winter Olympics. I would consider myself a bit of an Olympic junkie. Summer or Winter, doesn’t matter. Every two years for two weeks in either February or August, my life seems to stop and, to quote Fight Club, everything just seems to have the volume taken down- unless it’s Olympic related. These aren’t people who have decided to take HCG for weight loss to get their bodies in shape; these are people who have worked their entire life to for a chance to win. These people spend every day of their life in constant training for their event. They are in it physically and emotionally. So many sacrifices have been made all in the name of either making the Olympics or winning the gold. This, to me, is what makes the Olympics so incredible. It’s not about getting a new contract; it’s about giving your all and hopefully winning a medal.
One of the things that make the Olympics so incredible to watch is the idea of time. While some might like to watch the judged events like Figure Skating, I love watching events like downhill skiing and speed skating where one one-hundreth of a second can mean the difference between winning and losing. Yes, you heard that right: a hundredth of a second. That’s an amount of time that most of us can’t even comprehend. We deal in minutes and hours, we can’t imagine our entire life coming down to tenths and hundredths of seconds.
Yesterday I was watching a biathlon race where the winner won by four tenths of a second. Considering the fact that it was a 15 kilometer race, we are talking about mere inches separating the gold medalist from the silver medalist. It’s amazing to think that two athletes can stay that close for just over 10 miles.
Things like this make me wonder how this is worth it to the athletes. I’m not talking about the guy who won because I’m sure his life has just been made, no I’m talking about everyone is position 2-50. I’m sure a good majority of the participants are just happy to be there so they are just going for a personal best. But for those who were going for gold I can’t imagine what it would feel like to lose by .4 seconds. How do you sleep at night after something like that? I’m guessing being a world class means you’re as strong mentally as you are physically. That seems to be the only way you could get over that. Well, that, and keeping the faith that in another four years you’ll get your chance again.
