A Garden In Your Apartment?
Posted (Kim Green) in access discounts on July-16-2010

With the economy costing more jobs every day, people have to make sacrifices. While for some sacrifices will until entail eating out a few times less per week or cutting down on movie rentals, other’s will have to make bigger sacrifices, such as moving from a house into an apartment. While it may sound extreme, with the loss of income some families are being forced into making these type of tough decisions every day.

One of the big advantages of having a house is that you get a yard, and one of the big pluses of having a yard is the fact that you get to have a nice garden. For those who are making the transition to apartment living, having a garden can seem like a dream whose time has passed. I mean, you can’t have a garden indoors, right? Well, good news: with grow lights and grow light accessories you can grow almost anything that you could in your gardens from inside your apartment. All you need is a pot, some soil, a few seeds, some tender love and care, and a grow light.

So how does a grow light allow you to have an indoor garden? The key is in the bulbs. Grow lights bulbs give off a special kind of light that plants crave. You see, technically a tomato plant doesn’t need an outdoor setting; all it needs is the nutrients that are given off by the sun. If you’re able to provide that same nourishing light indoors then, bang, you have fresh, plump tomatoes. And no, regular lights won’t work. It’s the wrong kind of light, that’s why you need the special type of bulbs that only grow lights can give you.

Here’s more good news: you can put these grow lights anywhere. It’s not like you have to set up these pots and lights in the middle of your living room, you can use a spare closet or corner. You don’t need a lot of room for the actual grow lights, actually most of the room will actually be used for the pot.

And if you manage to find yourself back in a house in a few years, remember, grow lights can be used indoors year round. This means that while your outdoor garden is snowed in, you can grow fruits and veggies in the comfort of your own home. Why would you limit yourself to only having fresh vegetables in the spring and summer when you could be enjoying them year round. Remember: vegetables that you grow yourself always taste better.

Kim Green is amazed how well her gardens have done with the help of grow lights.

The Magic of Indoor Grow Lights
Posted (Kim Green) in access discounts on November-21-2009

Do you live in an apartment that lacks a personal garden space? Do you dream of growing roses but lack an outdoor space to do so? If so, you’ll be happy to know that grow lights can help you with your indoor growing needs.

Of all the flowers that one could grow in their garden, roses might be the most the most universally beloved and cherished. Unfortunately, not everyone lives in a location where having a garden or even growing live flowers is an option. Nary will an apartment let its occupants plant their own garden. How are these space-deprived individuals, then, supposed to experience the wonder of beauty of their own roses in an indoor setting? It’s a lot easier then you might think thanks to grow lights.

As the name might suggest, grow lights are specialized lights which allow plants to grow indoors. While it may seem like a strange concept, grow lights are utilized in many different areas where outdoor light is not always available. For example, Chase Field in Phoenix, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball team, utilizes grow lights to make sure that all parts of the grass field gets equal amounts of healthy light throughout the day. This is important because due to the roof casting shadows on the field at almost all times, not all of the grass gets an ample amount of light through the day. Many other stadiums around the world use grow lights to make sure the grass looks healthy every time the team hits the field.

On a smaller level, grow lights can work for your growing needs if you need healthy, natural light for an indoor gardening project. If you’re a fan of the hit animated TV series “King of The Hill” you’ve undoubtedly seem the episode where Bobby Hill hides the fact that he’s growing competitive roses in his bedroom closet. He finds that even without natural sunlight (his dad wouldn’t let him grow flowers in the garden) he is able to grow beautiful roses with grow lights.

While it might be a cartoon, there is nothing stopping you from trying the same thing at home. Essentially all roses need the same thing: nutrient rich soil, water and light. If a rose can get light from a grow light, as long as it gets the same vital nutrients for the soil and plenty of water it will grow just as well indoors.

The key to growing any flower to its full potential is knowing what you are doing. Besides reading the directions, make sure you check websites or books to find out what a rose needs to grow. Better yet, talk to a professional at a specialty flower shop; he’ll give you keen insights that others might not give you. You also have to make sure your using the correct wattage bulb on your grow lights. Different flowers need different types of light, so make sure you know what you’re giving your plant before you start growing it.

If you take care and take your time you’ll be sure to grow great roses. The key is knowing what your doing and it’s okay to try a little trial and error. By the end of the process you’ll have some great roses to show off at your next get together.

Using Grow Lights for a Basic Herb Garden
Posted (Kim Green) in access discounts on March-27-2009

Indoor gardening is not only possible, it can be fun as well. Using grow lights to grow the basic herb garden would give you access to fresh herbs all year.

Many people find that their biggest challenge to have a successful indoor garden is their location. If you live in an area – or a building, for that matter, that doesn’t receive an abundant amount of light, you may feel it is impossible to garden indoors successfully. Never fear, where there is a will, there is a way!

For growing herbs indoors, it seems that fluorescent lighting is probably the best bet. There are other types of lighting systems that include; high-intensity discharge and incandescent lighting. However, if you live in a small area and plan on a garden that is not too large, you will want to use grow lights that do not take up too much room but also do an excellent job in giving the seedlings a good start. One of the advantages of using fluorescent grow lights is that they release less heat making it a safer method. One important piece of information, initially, it is best to place your seedlings in a warm place.  Most people choose to start their herb garden in a room that is usually warm.  A laundry room is a good room to use.  If you don’t have a laundry room, use the room of the house that receives the most sun.  Even if you don’t receive direct sunlight in that particular room, if the sun beats down on a certain part of your house or apartment, that room should be the warmest room in your living spaced. When the seeds sprout you gradually increase the amount of light they get. This method works best; at least it has in my experience.

Fluorescent lighting is ideal for small gardening projects. The light given off from fluorescent bulbs can be as much as three times the intensity of incandescent lighting. It may take some trial and error on your part, to determine how to use grow lights to their best advantage.  As with anything, having a good plan before you purchase them and exploring all the possibilities they offer is the best idea.

To find the appropriate grow lights for herb garden seedlings, you need to know that a successful basic herb garden, or any gardening project for that matter, should receive anywhere from around 1500 to 3000 lumens per square feet. If you start your garden indoors, you won’t have the advantage of the naturally high lumens put out directly by the sun.

Once you know how to use grow lights, the rest of the process is easy and lots of fun. Knowing the herbs you want to grow, planting the seeds, and preparing for an abundant supply of fresh herbs throughout the year is definitely rewarding.

Residential Lighting – Aesthetics & Function For Home Improvement
Posted (Kim Green) in commercial lighting, grow lights, residential lighting on October-23-2008

While it can certainly be said that residential lighting is a basic necessity in terms of making it easier and more enjoyable to live comfortably when natural sunlight is not available, it has also become something worthy of art and creativity. It has often been said that the right kind of lighting has the potential to raise property values, and in general enhance living spaces and office aesthetics. Thanks to the continuous evolving and revolution of style and function, residential lighting can be beautiful and something to admire while still remaining functional and cost effective. You’ll easily find many different styles of residential lights to meet your design needs.

Grow lights, on the other hand, are not so much about being pleasing to the eye, as they are more geared towards being a functional form of lighting. A grow light is used to promote growth in a plant by emitting the same electromagnetic spectrum that photosynthesis needs to take place. There are many different types of grow lights available, with each giving off certain colors, spectrums, temperatures and light waves. Grow lighting is desired by those who are interested in growing plants because they give off the same daytime rays, tones and color temperatures that natural sunlight does. You can pick the right grow light for your growing needs by looking over a color rendering index and choosing the appropriate solution.

Then there is commercial lighting. Commercial lighting blends contemporary style with the need to provide appropriate lighting in a functional manner. You’ll find commercial lights in use in just about any non-residential setting you can think of. These settings include stadiums, stores, outdoor arenas and even the streets and roads that are lined with street lights. Commercial lighting solutions are available based on form, function, energy savings and cost effectiveness. Mix and match commercial lighting options for the desired result and attributes.

All of these types of lighting — residential lights, commercial lights, grow lights — can be used as an application to make living more enjoyable and more functional. Without lighting, we’d have a pretty hard time of it once the sun set.

If you would like to shop for these types of lighting, any hardware store or discount retailer will have their own selection of them. But for the greatest overall selection and best prices, look to the internet as your source. Many websites, such as accessdiscounts.com, have a large selection of lighting solutions available.
