Most people would think that you were crazy to open a franchise in this economy. Fortunately, though, if you pick something logical and cover all your bases you’ll be able to make sure your franchise will get through the toughest times.
With the economy the way it is, some people might say you would be absolutely crazy to try and purchase a shop from a children’s franchise right now. The news has been satirized with stories of franchises getting decimated and shops closing almost as quickly as they open; but children’s franchises? Haven’t we heard that parents are cutting back to bare bones? What parent is going to spend extra money on a children’s service when they can barely pay rent?
The thing that some people tend to forget about a children’s franchise is that it doesn’t necessarily have to about spending “extra” money on an expense. No one is telling you to purchase a franchise that sells nothing but designer pacifiers- that would not be a good purchase. Instead, children’s franchises can be about stuff that parents do need, like haircuts, or affordable clothes at reasonable prices. Not all franchises are about excess and as long as you offer a good product at an affordable price. With this and some good advertising your franchise should be able to survive any economic downturn.
While parent’s will sometimes look to save money by not paying for services that they can now do themselves (think lawn mowing, pool cleaning, etc.), there are a few things where the risk is sometimes not worth the reward. A prime example of this is a child’s haircut. If parents can find an affordable place that their kids actually want to get their hair cut, they will be willing to spend the money instead of risking messing up their children’s hair. If you can find a franchise that offers a proven track record of repeat customers in the kids haircutting business then jump on it. You still have to do some intense advertising to make sure people still come, but with a proven name that parents trust and kids love this is not that bad of a risk.
Clothing might be a tougher inroad then something such as haircutting. There are two types of clothing stores: designer and discount. Unfortunately, since most big box stores sell clothing at a discount there is not a huge market for new discount clothing franchises (and if you’ve looked around lately, there aren’t many trying). Designer children clothing franchises can succeed, but aren’t really that great of a bet considering how thin of a line you have to walk to make a profit. If you are going to go the designer clothing route with a franchise make sure it’s with someone who has already established a name for themselves. Also, make sure you’re in a well off neighborhood where there might be a little extra money to burn. Another thing: designer baby clothes are a good bet, there are just too many of them. Make sure you’re the only one in an area and make sure it’s a busy location.
There is no such thing as a “sure thing” in this economy, but as long as you take some care you’ll be able to open some sort of childrens franchise with ease, and more important, keep it open.
Opening some type of childrens franchise is something author Kimberly Green has looked into and is still considering in her business plan.
Think it’s not a good time to invest in a franchising opportunity? Surprisingly, this might be the best time to own your own business as long as you’re smart about what you offer and creative about how you offer it.
How do you make your money grow? With the economy in shambles, and personal finances in disarray, this may not look like the right time to look into investing into a franchise. The truth is, though, this might actually be the perfect to invest. Why you might ask? Because buy-in’s are cheap and companies are willing to bend over backwards for people who have the money to purchase one of their franchises. The key is finding the right one: something stable and secure, something, as the professionals call it, “recession proof”.
The good thing about finding a “recession proof” business is that they are easier to spot then you might think. You need to think of businesses, or professions, that have stood the test of time, businesses that people turn to even in the worst economic situations. It’s all about separating what people “need” away from what people merely “want”. The average consumer will cut the “wants’” out of their budgets long before they cut out the “needs”. This especially goes for children. Parent’s will usually sacrifice their own “wants’” long before their children’s, and thus a children’s “needs” are generally the last thing to go from a families budget.
For example, every kid needs a haircut and parents are rarely willing to cut their kid’s hair on their own. This is why a children’s salon franchise would be a great business to look into become a franchisee of. Hair always grows no matter what the economic climate and if you’re able to gain a loyal client base your likely going to be able to watch your investment grow right in front of your eyes.
The average child usually gets his or her hair cut at least once every two months. That means if you make a great impression on parents by giving their child a good haircutting experience, you’d be likely to see them at least six times a year. Parents are usually looking for something more than a great haircut, though. Since children’s haircuts are usually fairly basic, they could take their kids anyway to get them. No, parents are looking for a place where their kids will enjoy their haircut so there won’t be any tantrums when it comes time for the next one.
When it comes to a hair cutting experience, children want someplace where they feel comfortable. This can mean anywhere from a comfy chair to bells and whistles such as televisions, balloons or a small “prize” at the end of a haircut. The key is thinking what a child would want, as well as what would make a parent trust your establishment. By just using your head you’ll develop a business model, such as this idea of a salon franchise, that will keep parents coming back, as well as a franchise that is “recession proof”.

Finding a franchise opportunity that works takes research and risk. By just using some common sense you can find the perfect franchise for any economic climate.
With so many kids franchise opportunities out there, which do you choose to invest your money on? What type of franchises are so called “recession proof” and which ones are ticking time bombs waiting to explode.
Let’s back up a bit. Chances are, if you’re looking to invest right now you have a little extra money sitting around. You earned this money, so the key to finding the right investment is taking your time and looking at what kids need and not so much what they want. When wallets tighten the first thing that goes is so called “luxury” items.
With that in mind, it may not be the smartest bet to invest in a Chuck-E-Cheese’s type “food and play” center. Not that we all don’t love pizza and video games, but would you be willing to pay for them if money was tight? Most families would limit or even eliminate extra expenditures like these.
How about parent financed stores such as Hot Topic or Claires? Kids love the newest style of t-shirts and accessories. Parents are usually willing to spend some money to keep their kids current and kids love specialties stores that help make the trends as well as follow them. At the same time, though, chain stores like Target and Wal Mart have started selling new lines that keep pace with the newest trends (Wal Mart has the new Miley Cyrus line). This might be a tossup, but because big chain stores are becoming more prevalent, and powerful, it might be best to skip over this.
So what do kids always need? Or better yet, what do children need that parents aren’t willing to either do themselves or skimp on quality. Obviously medical services are something that parents would never skimp on… but that is left best to the professionals.
How about hair? Every child needs a haircut. Sure, parents might consider or, more accurately, threaten to cut their child’s hair, but realistically most parents will leave the cutting to a professional. Parents are looking for a quality haircut at a reasonable price, as well as a place where kids will feel comfortable so they don’t get any resistance when the time to comes for the next one. This is why, if run properly, a child’s salon will always see business even when the economy is down. Sure, it’s not a sure thing or easy money, but it is something that should see a steady line of clients.
There are several child-centric salons which are currently offering franchises. Take a look and see if it is something you would be interested in. Remember, the best kids franchise is one that you fully believe in. With that in mind, take your time, follow your heart, and you’ll make the right decision.

What could be better then an established name brand to help kick off your career as a business owner? Nothing could be better because a franchise ownership is one of the most affective ways to start your own business.
One in three businesses fails within the first year. However, that statistic drastically drops when you enter into the equation a franchise business. Why is this? Well, it’s simple. When you purchase a franchise you aren’t just purchasing a name (which in its own right has power) but you are purchasing a strong business plan and in many cases, the support structure to help you succeed.
Many first time business owners have ventured into business with the McDonald’s corporation. McDonalds happens to be the largest land owner in the world and they have a unique distinction of being the biggest landlord in the world as well. See, McDonalds will sell you a franchise and then assist you with the best location. In doing so, they can ensure you remain competitive and that they don’t over saturate a given market place. This system has worked well as McDonalds is one of the largest companies in the world and boasts the largest buying power. Another great point about McDonalds is Hamburger U. A school designed not only for McDonald’s managers but for current and future franchise owners. They believe in taking that extra step to ensure their owners are up to speed and ready to be successful. In fact, it’s not uncommon to see a franchise owner invested in several regional locations. That’s a true sign of a successful franchise owner.
Another successful franchise is one in which you have a personal investment. Fast food can be rewarding but few people have a built in love and passion for the work that is being done. So, for those people, finding something that hits close to home and being able to do it for a living is the most rewarding and successful venture of all. For example, many people have found that investing in a childrens franchise (or a franchise relating to children’s needs) is a greatly rewarding and successful venture. To add to this example, a franchise like Snip-its can be rewarding as well as successful because they are the industry leader in child’s hair cutting. As with most franchise companies, you’ll find a wealth of support to help you begin the process of starting your business. This is a great example of a well thought out business plan that doesn’t require you to be an expert in hair cutting but does allow you to effectively run the business and to see a profit.
When asked, would you rather go into business alone or would you rather have an established name brand supporting you along with a structured business plan and support team the answer really seems easy to answer. That’s because it is! Nothing in business is a sure fire success and all businesses take strict dedication to ensure success but ultimately a franchise is a great way to ensure success. Whether it’s a McDonalds or a children’s franchise you’ll find that taking the route more traveled in this case will prove to be a bigger success.
Author Kimberly Green ran a home business for several years and has implemented a few excellent ideas for a successful childrens franchise as well.
