Remember when you were a kid and you could eat anything and not gain weight? Where a quesadilla at midnight and then bedtime at 12:15 wouldn’t lead to love handles? Yeah, well, those days are long gone. Now we need to exercise, watch what we eat, learn how to mix HCG, or risk losing the battle of the bulge. Face it, we aren’t teenagers anymore, and our body is well aware of it.
One of the first things that goes when you grow up is that wonderful metabolism that kept that weight off when you were younger. Frankly, as you grow, your body needs all that fat and calories to fuel it. You might not remember, but you move a lot when you’re a teenager so most of those excess calories get burnt up. Now that you’re older, that metabolism is slower and we live much more sedentary lifestyles with work and such, so those extra calories just stay in your body. This is why you tend to gain weight as you grow older. It’s a shock to the system when you realize this, and that is why people have a tendency to fill out a bit as they hit middle age. This is also why you need to come up with a plan to keep the weight off when you’re eating habits don’t line up with your metabolism.
The first thing to remember when you’re setting up a workout plan is to be realistic. Don’t expect to be able to grab a six pack and lift 500 pound weights if you’ve treated the gym like a plague for 20 years. Start out by just having one simple goal: keeping weight off. You see, as you grow older it becomes harder to lose weight. It’s still possible, of course, but it also means a complete change in lifestyle. If you’re willing to do that: great. If not, then just stick to the idea of fighting weight gain by coming up with a plan to keep yourself in shape. Try and carve out a trip to the gym three times during the week, with an hour of cardio and weights. Maybe, as time goes on, you can join a bicycling class or a yoga class.
Another thing to consider is altering your diet as your age progresses. I’m not talking about cutting everything out, but maybe limit your fast food habit to once a week or eating more vegetables. They are just little steps you can take to make sure you live a long and healthy life.

While watching the World Cup, you seem to be reminded constantly how sexy soccer players are. I’m not talking about just by watching, I’m talking about the fact that announcers keep talking about how such-and-such soccer play was voted the sexiest player in Europe or South America or something. As a woman I agree, these players probably have the best bodies in sports, but it’s kind of annoying to be constantly reminded of this during a close soccer match.
The one thing that these comments do get me thinking about is how committed you have to be to get a body like that. For these athletes it’s not about learning how to mix HCG or taking a few minutes at the gym, it’s about constant exercise mixed with a diet that is carefully controlled and scrutinized. It’s not so much a physical thing but a mental thing, and something that very few of us would have the self control to successfully do. This is why athletes are so damn mentally strong.
Ok, look, these people aren’t Superman or something. It’s not like they are doing something absolutely extraordinary. With that said, you have to be impressed with someone who can exercise and train for hours a day and eat a diet that probably doesn’t include any of your favorite foods. Plus, since these soccer players are among the most popular people in the world, being in the spotlight constantly they are always being scrutinized for their body and their play. Look at someone like David Beckham. One of the best soccer players of our generation and he is constantly being attacked by people who ever do what he does.
So how do you look like a soccer player? It’s easy: just train and eat like a soccer player. As mentioned above, half of it is just mental fortitude. To get into that type of shape you need to commit to it, not just expect to do it through diet and exercise. Think of it this way: to be in soccer friendly shape you need to be able to run up and down the field for a full 90 minutes. This means that you not only need strength (especially in your legs), but also a good amount of cardio for your endurance. Once you’ve mastered your workout routine you then have to think about putting together a diet that will help you lose weight and build muscle. This means cutting out the carbs and stocking up on proteins and vegetables. Sound fun? Also, try skipping dessert for the next ten years.
Soccer is a tough sport and getting in shape for it is harder than you might imagine. Try started slow and if you find your able to commit to it you could have the next Beckham body. Of course, now you just have to learn how to play soccer.

Its funny how mentally prepared you have to get yourself in order to start a weight loss routine. Some people say “Oh, it’s 50% mental and 50% physical”, but I disagree. I say it’s about 90% mental and 10% physical. Running a mile is easy- getting yourself up to run a mile is almost impossible. Sometimes I just wonder why I don’t take the easy way out. Take a diet pill or take some HCG for weight loss. Nope, I want to do it the honest way. I don’t want any help, I apparently want to take the hard road. Why? Well, to quote Homer Simpson “Because I’m an idiot”.
Ok, ok, I’m being dramatic. It’s not like taking a supplement is technically cheating; it’s just a lot to commit to, at least in my book. Once I eventually get into a weight loss routine it will be easier to get up and run, but whenever you start something up the first few weeks are like torture. I literally considered doing finances yesterday instead of doing my run… and I hate finances more than just about anything.
I’ve found that when it comes to running my one salvation is music. With a busy day I don’t get much time to listen to new music, really the only time I have to listen to my iPod is while running. As I like to keep current on my music, I have officially dubbed my runs as my “new music time”. Every day before my run I’ll put together a new playlist features new songs I’ve downloaded, songs I’ve found on podcasts and a couple of old favorites to keep me going on my run. This gets me motivated to go on my run, it’s my time to find out what’s new in the world of music.
Right now my favorite running songs run the gammit from dance-rock like LCD Soundsystem and Does This Offend You, Yeah?, to “gypsy-punk” band Gogol Bordello and one of my old favorites The Arcade Fire. The key when running is to find music that you can get lost in. You want more than a soundtrack to your run, you want something that becomes part of your run. I came to the realization last week that I’m never going to actually find myself looking forward to a run. What I will look forward to, though, is a chance to listen to my favorite music.
Now that is what I call motivation.

I learned a valuable lesson the other day: if you’re going to go for a run at night, don’t plan to do it too close to your bed time. Oh, you can try other fitness related activities before sleepy time: do a few pushups, take some HCG for weight loss, or lift some weights. But as much as you think a brisk run is going to tire you out, you are very, very wrong.
If you think about it, it’s fairly simple body dynamics: if you do any type of strenuous exercise before bed you’re going to raise your heart beat level. Because of this, your body is going to release some endorphins. This is going to perk you up, even if your body is tired and ready for bed.
I unfortunately learned this the hard way. When I got back from my run at around 8:30pm my body felt like it wanted to just fall into a pile and just fall asleep right there in the entry way. After some effort I finally lugged myself upstairs, changed into my pajamas, got into bed and set my head down for a nights rest.
Then… bam: wide awake. I couldn’t have fallen asleep if you hit me on the head with a mallet (actually, don’t try that). Even though my body felt tired enough to sleep my mind was racing. I ended up tossing and turning for about two hours before I was finally able to sleep.
When talking with my friends I discovered that this is fairly common. Your brain often has a much different agenda then your body. It can feel that your body wants to rest, but it still has some stuff to get done on its own. When I asked my friends what they did to fight this they gave me a good two part answer:
1)Plan your run an hour earlier than usual. This will give your brain more of a chance to slow down before bed time. And…
2)Take a shower. A nice warm shower will not only help sooth your aching muscles, but also calm your mind.
This two part plan actually worked. I tried it after my next run and I found that by the time I was in bed my mind was finally restful. It’s amazing how your body works, how you have to coax different parts of it in different ways. So next time you’re tossing and turning after a night of exercise take a shower. It might help your plight, and make you smell a little better in the process.

Since I was a child I’ve admired the magic of spring training baseball. It’s all about a renewal and new beginnings. And it’s unlike anything else in sports.
When I was a kid my dad used to take me and my brother to spring training games down in Florida for the weekend. This was always a weekend of sun, fun, catching multiple games a day and meeting a lot of young players who would go on to be superstars. I came to treasure these times not only because it was great family time, but because it would ignite a lifelong love of spring training. It not only meant that the sun was coming out again, but that it was a new beginning for everyone in baseball.
During the off-season you would always here about baseball players getting ready for the season. In the dark days of December you would read about their workout regimens, about how they would spend their mornings learning how to mix HCG, then going out to train at their indoor gym all afternoon long. What spring training meant is that everything was starting anew and that the training regime would now begin to pay off on the actual field. It was like the beginning of spring and a sign that things would begin changing.
My favorite thing to do at spring training was watch the pitchers. Unlike just about any other position in sports, pitching is about finding your rhythm. It’s about getting back that fastball that you last left on the mound four months ago. Spring training for a pitcher is about making sure your speed and control doesn’t slip. It’s about trying to perfect your art.
During spring training, outside of bullpen work managers don’t like to have their pitchers on the mound for too long. It is possible to wear your pitcher out if you push them too hard out of the gate. You watch managers bring their pitchers into spring training games for about 2 innings at a time and just when a pitcher is about to hit his stride you take him out. It’s all about coaxing a pitcher to slowly get to his full potential. Start them at 70% and slowly build them up so that when they are ready for opening day they are at a full 100%. This is why managers get paid so much and are much smarter than the average sports fan: they know about patience and they about finding the best way to get the most out of their playoffs. Its reasons like that why there is nothing quite like spring training baseball.
