If you are in the medical profession you understand how important a lab coat is throughout the day. Chances are, you also know that there is a difference between a men’s and a women’s lab coat.
There are many things in the clothing universe that you just don’t think about. Like for example: is there a difference between men’s lab coats and women’s lab coats? I guess it really doesn’t matter unless you wear a lab coat all day, but if you do wear one then you probably know the answer: yes, there is. It might be subtle, but for doctors subtle is important.
In recent years a big industry has sprung up for both male and female specific lab coats. Maybe it’s all these doctor show’s starring beautiful people which are fueling this industry, but women have specific needs when it comes to fit and comfort just like men do. It’s not just the medical industry either, many companies have ditched unisex uniforms for male and female uniforms which are tailored to each sexes individual needs.
In the medical field, uniforms are very common. From receptionists to nurses to doctors to surgeons, everyone you see seems to be wearing a specific uniform tailored for their tasks. For nurses, scrubs are usually the norm. While there is not a huge difference in the tailored pattern for each sex, there are definitely design differences. For example, there is a huge market for themed scrubs. For women you can get anything from a pattern of cats to Big Bird from Sesame Street. For men, well, they usually go plain but the sky is the limit for them to. Scrubs can also run the gambit in cost from cheap pairs which you can change daily to something designer and expensive that can last the long haul.
For doctors, uniforms are a bit difference. For his time in his office a doctor will usually wear either slacks and a dress shirt, or a dress and pant suit, depending on the sex. When it’s time to visit the patients, though, it’s usually time to don a lab coat over your outfit. Most hospitals or clinics will usually allow doctors to pick their own lab coats and though most look the same (some variation of the color white and a few pockets), not all lab coats are created equal. Besides having different styles for both men and women, lab coats can feature different designs, strain protectors, fabrics and even pockets. Cost wise, they can go from a basic lab coat that will need to be tossed after a few months for around $30 to a designer lab coat that can repel stains and stay white for a couple hundred dollars. Since they spend so much time in them a doctor will usually invest in a more expensive coat so they don’t need to keep replacing them.
So there you go. There is a difference in men’s lab coats and women’s lab coats. See, you learn something new every day.

Just like commercial lighting, concert lighting can run the gambit from simple white lights to complex colored lighting which can bring out the subtleties in a venue.
Lighting is one of the true unsung heroes of any concert performance. Just like commercial lighting, concert lighting can take many forms and can be used to bring out subtleties on stage. It’s not just about the spotlights anymore; lighting has taken a big step forward in the concert industry in recent years.
There are two concerts in recent years where lighting has stuck out to me. The first was Nine Inch Nails in 1999. While supporting their double album “The Fragile”, Nine Inch Nails took off for a North American tour visiting, in their words, “hockey arenas”. What made the lighting on this show so incredible was the fact that the band utilized LCD screens for their main lighting. These large screens were attached to machinery that allowed them to shift during the concert and take their place either above or behind the band. These screens could show either images or just color, which made them the primary lighting source for the band. This was the first time a major band had utilized LCD screens for their key lighting on tour, something that has been copied in recent years by some of the biggest bands in the world like U2 and Radiohead.
The second concert that stuck out in my mind in regards to lighting was a 2003 performance by a Long Island band named Brand New. What made this concert stand out was the fact that the band was entirely back lit for their performance. I had never seen a band do this before. Frankly, it was eye opening. There were no lights either above or in front of the band, just behind it. Because Brand New’s music is moody and, at points, intense, this lighting set up was perfect for the band and thoroughly enhanced their performance. I actually recently saw Brand New again recently and they had an entirely new set up featuring bright white lights were used in conjunction with black and white video.
I consider myself a bit of a concert nut. As someone who attends concerts as much as once a week, you tend to notice concert lighting a bit more than the average concert goer. You realize how lighting can really accent a bands performance. On two opposing ends of the spectrum are bands like U2 and a southern Florida band named Against Me! U2 has been crafting giant stage setups for 20 years and always find new and ingenious ways to light their performance may it be car headlights or giant spaceship like stages. On the other hand you have Brand New who have a tendency to have one lighting set up per show without ever changing it. I once saw a performance where the lighting guy went to his controls and brought up these intense bright white lights which never dimmed at all during the performance. It was intense, but matched the performance perfectly. That’s all you can ask for in a live show.

For every great tool the internet has given us like live video streaming services, the internet has also given us wonderful distractions like live panda webcams. Before we decry them, these distractions also show us how far we’ve come and how much we have stayed the same.
To see how much the internet has changed life as we know it you have to look at the simple things. Sure, we have stuff like live video streaming services, and you can listen to radio live from just about anywhere in the world, but that stuff is the stuff you tend to think about everyday. Instead, just take a look at all the stupid little distractions that live streaming video has given us in the last decade. You can check out just about anything online. As we speak I am watching a live webcam of a baby panda from the San Diego Zoo. Cute? Yes. Unnecessary? Absolutely. But if there is anything that is indicative of the “age of the internet”, this is it. You now have literally millions of ways of waste your time, and you can access them anytime you want. And frankly, there is nothing wrong with this.
Don’t get me wrong, distraction did not just begin with the internet. Let me tell you a little story I heard when I was on a family vacation back in the late 90’s. On a cruise to Alaska we had an excursion day in Juneau. During our excursion we hired a cab to take us around and see the sights. During one of our stops our cabbie told us a story about how the local cable supplier had an open channel which they decided to fill with a live camera of a fish tank while they tried to negotiate a real network to fill that slot. About six months later they finally filled the channel with a real entertainment network, hence taking the fish tank off the air. To the cable suppliers surprise they were bombarded with calls and letters from locals demanding that they bring the fish tank back. Apparently they became so attached to the fish tank that they watched the channel religiously.
To me, stories like this prove that there is always a market for these live animal webcams online. Webcams showing everything from pandas to buildings to trees to, yes, even fish tanks gets thousands of viewers daily. Do they make money? Who knows, but they show where technology has taken us. But this is just the way it goes with technology: each medium starts out as a way to get information out and then as it advances in comes other sources and, eventually, distractions. When television was created it was three channels. Now, there are 500-1000 channels and no lack of “distractions” on the airwaves. Heck, even the news channels are “entertainment” based.
This is what happened with the internet. Once people got use to webcams and e-mail, then came web based entertainment and around the clock web coverage. Where will the internet in the future? Who knows, but I know that I’ll be there watching it.

When considering how to propose to your significant other, it’s good to take “Hollywood” out of the equation. Fancy restaurants with candles and violins might seem like the norm, but a special place like a hot dog stand might just make the memories even more special.
No matter what your personal preference is, there are a plethora of places to purchase engagement rings in Orange County. Whether you’re looking for something simple or complex, subtle or “in your face”, Orange County’s many jewelry stores have you covered. While purchasing the engagement ring might be easy, there are some other, more glaring questions to focus on. Namely: where, exactly, are you going to pop the question?
One of the more traditional places to ask your girlfriend to marry you is at a restaurant. In Hollywood movies and TV shows, this seems to be the “place de jour” to show the man getting down on his knees and taking out the ring. To use an old political term, as goes Hollywood usually goes the rest of society, so most guys believe that this is the way to go. I’m not here to complain about that idea. The restaurant engagement can be a beautiful moment and a great idea. The only problem is, most guys think that it just naturally happens. That’s probably Hollywood’s fault because the engagements look so natural on screen. These things have to be planned- don’t expect “the perfect moment” or something “zany” to happen. The truth is there is no good moment, instead, you have the make the moment happen yourself and make sure you have all the bases covered.
For example, at what part of the meal are you going to pop the question? The traditional time to do this is either before or during desert and I would have to agree on this. Chances are you’re not going to wait around for the rest of the meal after she has cried and answered “yes”. Though, you have to remember, as a man your going to have to keep your cool through three courses and not freak out over the anticipation.
Something else that Hollywood has taught us is that these proposals must be done in a fancy restaurant with candlelight and violins. Truth is, though, if you want your proposal to be at a hot dog shack that is special to you and your girlfriend, go for it. It’s all about what you and you’re soon to be significant other find to be romantic and magical. There is no manual to it, but if you play it right and pop the question at a place you both love, then there will be nothing to worry about.
Remember; if you want to find the perfect ring search online in your area first, like ‘engagement rings orange county‘ and then shop around.

Parents know that kids clothing can be expensive. What they don’t know, though, is that by buying their kids seasonal clothes out of season the can save some very much needed money.
Let’s face it, purchasing kids clothes can be a stressful and expensive endeavor. Any parent can relate stories of going into a chain store of specialty shop and being shocked by the prices they find. Of course, since kids have a tendency to grow out of clothes faster then you can buy them; most parents are also powerless to resist these clothing prices. Who has the time to comparison shop when your trips to the clothing store occur between school getting out at 3 and soccer practice beginning at 4.
For those looking for a way to cut their kids clothing costs, there is something that they can do: plan ahead. Buying clothes out of season is the best way to find good deals. To clear out their inventory, most clothing companies will have monster sales to make way for new “seasonal product”. This means that sweaters will be up to 75% less in June as they are in December. Visa versa for summer garb: want a great price on a child’s swimsuit? Check out the prices in November.
This of course means a lot of planning ahead. To get the best deals, you’re probably going to buy clothing about six months before your kids will need them (note: this may not apply to the southern states where shorts and t-shirts can be utilized year round). This means looking ahead to see how much your child is going to grow in that time. For those whose kids are older might have a little bit easier time then those who kids are babies. Kids will have growth spurts, but nowhere near what babies have. If you have friends with kids ask them how much they grew from a certain age. You can also check the internet or books for typical child growth charts.
When purchasing out of season clothes, it is always pertinent to pay attention to style as well as price. Since kids can be picky, make sure you purchase something that they will actually wear. What good is saving $5 on a sweatshirt if your child has a tantrum every time they have to wear it? Make sure they accompany you during the sale so that they can pick designs that they like. Also, try and pick more neutral colors and designs as kids will be more willing to wear these. You can always fill out an ensemble later in the year when the more contemporary seasonal designs are out, this is all about getting the major shopping out of the way (this is where you will spend most of your money anyway).
By following these simple steps you will be able to save a good amount of money on your child’s clothes. Be sure to check chain and big box stores in season as sometimes they might have overbought and are looking to get rid of some of their product, including trendy kids clothes. This way you can get current product for sales prices that are usually reserved for off season.
